Science And Faith Examined (SAFE) - "Why is the Universe Pythagorean?"

Missio sponsors Science and Faith events 2-3 times per year on the Caltech campus, and the event includes a free dinner (for members of the Caltech community), a talk , and time for Q&A and dialog about the topic.

Pythagoras taught in 500BC what science now affirms: that the hidden order of the universe can be expressed through mathematics. Why is the universe intelligible to us in this way?

Our conversation will start with a talk from Dr. Alexey Burov, a physicist at the Fermi National Laboratory in Chicago, where he is employed as Senior Scientist. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and the organizer and chair of Fermi Society of Philosophy.

Thanksgiving at CENTENNIAL

  • 235 East Holly Street Pasadena, CA, 91101 United States (map)

We have been invited to serve at Centennial on the day before Thanksgiving. Union Station is hosting a Thanksgiving meal for the residents and we will come alongside them to serve and to spend time with the residents. This is a GREAT opportunity. The residents really miss having an actual meal together, and we have the chance to support this. We will also share a 15-20 minute Thanksgiving liturgy with a gratitude activity to do around the tables.

Since we’ll be helping with this event before Thanksgiving, we will NOT have our regularly scheduled dessert club, which would have been the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

If you would like to be part of this event, email amy@missiocc.org or use this link to RSVP:

Join us for our first Science and Faith Examined Event of this year.

Our mission with SAFE events: To create a collegial environment for the examination of faith and science questions at Caltech and beyond. We believe that the examination of questions of faith and science is absolutely vital to an open-minded and thorough search for truth.

Our monthly meetings follow a simple format: Eat a meal, listen to a talk by a prominent scientist or philosopher, and discuss in groups of eight to ten. Please register here so that we have an accurate count for pizza.

Our topic for this month is: Does technology help or hinder human flourishing?

Using curiosity to tune our practices as users and designers in a tech-centric world.

"It has come to my attention that a significant contingent of our congregation has yet to experience the 1998 classic, The Parent Trap. This must be rectified! The Parent Trap is a feel-good, family-friendly comedy about a pair of twins who meet each other for the first time at a summer camp. Pranks, sweet moments, and '90s nostalgia abound. Whether you've seen the movie zero or 100 times, come watch the movie, eat snacks, and join us for a light-hearted discussion about family relationships... and perhaps debate who is the true villain of the movie. Feel free to bring friends! Butterfly clips and choker necklaces optional."

Movie Night - The Adjustment Bureau

Movie Night - The Adjustment Bureau

This summer we’re hosting bi-weekly movie nights!

Do any of us have free will, or are our lives planned out for us—by parents? Context? God? Destiny? If we are married, for example, did we really choose our mate, or is there some more primary sense in which we were chosen for each other? The Adjustment Bureau seeks to get at these questions, as two lovers seek to defy a predestined plan, in which the lovers both have successful careers but are not together.

The format is simple: we’ll watch a movie together and then spend some time in discussion about the movie as a group. Snacks and drinks provided. If you are a movie buff, come through, if not, still come through for the hangs! Invite friends as well—all are welcome as this is a great way for people to get integrated into the Missio community.

Date: Friday, August 25, 7-10pm
Location: Allen Rd, Pasadena (Mike & Albert’s)
